Description

While up at the observatory with Mike and Pete during the new moon July 2023 we were able to observe a <2% waxing very young moon. At 1.38 days and 1.93% illumination it is one of the youngest moons I have observed. I make an attempt every month to catch this lovely transition from or to New Moon. That evening all three of us were able to see this young moon Mercury close to it  Mars, and Venus.

This image is of the Very Young <2% waxing moon using the CDK17 and a Red Filter at F/6.8. An exposure of 0.125" for this single frame. image At the time this image was taken it was 5° above the horizon and through 10.15 air masses and just 33 hours past new.

The youngest moon I have captuerd at 0.53% Illumination and just over 13 hours can be found here: https://www.astrobin.com/full/3gorrs/0/
